Eagle, Idaho, United States 5/5 It seriously angers me that this place is gone. One of the best arcades in the world, sandwiches too.

The Rec Room - Calgary Calgary, Canada 1/5 People need to stop calling this place an arcade. If anything it's a modern day carnival filled with games that have nearly impossible odds at winning even the more modest payouts. Aside from the redemption games, there are a few modern day throwbacks to classics, but all of them are only matching in theme. Anyone looking to relive a gaming past with a sense of nostalgia will be severely disappointed. The place is designed to keep you playing mindless redemption games for as long as possible with as little end result payout as they can. You wanna spend $30 on game credits? Sure, and at the end we’ll offer you a Rec Room branded slap bracelet or pencil for 3000 tickets, but you’re only 2500 short. This is in a way how these places can avoid being seen as gambling establishments. I belive it has a detrimental impact on what constitutes an arcade. As someone who’s been in the arcade hobby for half a decade, I can tell you that the three hours I spent there with friends was the least “arcade” experience i’ve ever had. Think of it more like the midway at the Stampede, only the attendants shower more, have a higher count of teeth, and the games have RFID built into them. Also, I understand with the high rate of traffic the need to increase the player turnover on some of the games, but what they've done to the two pinball machines is downright criminal. The tilt sensor in a pin should not be set so that standard gameplay of a multi-ball sets it off. Plus those two pins are filthy and each require a proper playfield cleaning. Definitely a bad experience if you're looking for pinball. I'm sure they're only there because it has something to do with Player One's criminal Monopoly on Stern distribution in Canada. Bottom line: If you’re looking for a mindless way to burn money that you didn’t need for some hollow thrills, in an overcrowded environment much like a night at the club, go wait in line outside of The Rec Room, (much like you’d do at a club). I’m sure the pub like area is a decent place to watch a sporting event, but at the end of the day supporting locally owned establishments will provide you a much better experience.
