The flipper buttons are actually linear potentiomenters the further you push the button in, the more the flipper moves on the screen.
Because the flippers are really paddles moving left and right, it is more like a complicated Pong game. The game starts with a ball bouncing left and right across the playfield. Pulling back on the ball shooter and letting go causes the ball to shoot down. Gravity is simulated and the ball will slow down as it moves vertically.
