Players walk around a three-quarters perspective maze shooting at various enemies. After shooting an enemy the enemy's "soul" a dark version of itself attempts to make its way to the top of the screen to an awaiting monster mouth. The player must touch the enemy soul before it gets there or a more difficult enemy is regenerated.

Inferno's maze layout is somewhat similar to Crystal Castles, but without the wide changes in maze height. There seems to be only three or four "heights" of the maze, which the player can reach via small stairways.

The exact number of manufactured games is unknown, but it is estimated that fewer than 50 of these cabinets were made.
The cabinet is slightly different from a Joust cabinet in that the monitor is tilted back from the player at about a 30 degree angle and the control panel slopes upward further onto the monitor bezel.
A Joust 2 boardset can be converted into an Inferno by swapping ROMs, adding two RAM ICs into available sockets and changing some jumpers. Other games with similar hardware to Joust 2 are Mystic Marathon and Turkey Shoot.
