Game Play

Engine upgrades included front and rear engines, there were three option levels of each. The rear engines being the fastest. There were many shortcuts available on this game. If you saw a break in the curb, chances were it would be a shortcut. Sand drifts and snow caused problems as well.

/In it's four-player configuration, all players have to remain on the same screen. If you progress to the head of the pack, you are nearly blind to what is waiting behind the next bend. You burn gas to play and receive more gas from placing in second or first and/or picking up gas power-ups. Gas is lost through driving, hitting hazards or being warped back into the pack if you fall far behind. Further you are awarded cash based on place that is used to upgrade your car. Once a player gets on a roll the modifications become pretty intense and can lead to sustained winning streaks. Upgrades include wings that improve general turning, tires for traction, front, rear engines for speed and bumpers to reduce the gas reductions from hazard impacts. Rear engines are the most powerful and expensive. Tires if not appropriate for various track surfaces can hurt more than help. New players that join with stock hot rods in the later levels have little chance of success.
