The laserdisc generated the background images only, while the PCB generated the gameplay grid. The game has a default mode that allow the player to play the game if the laserdisc player fails. In this situation, the PCB overlay graphics are the only images present on screen. Although the game is much less attractive and enjoyable, this default allowed the operator to still cash in on the game even if the very unreliable laser player failed.
