Game Play

The game featured a rotary knob with which to set the detonation depth of the depth charges, which was indicated onscreen by a horizontal white dotted line. The knob was pressed once to release each depth charge from the surface ship a destroyer, which passed back and forth across the surface of the water at the top of the screen at a fixed rate. The speed of the ship increased on each level. A maximum of three depth charges at a time could be delivered, until a delay of a few seconds had elapsed during which time it was assumed that the crew of the destroyer was reloading. This game was unique in its use of a single rotary knob which could also be pressed to activate a microswitch you could hear it click. This combination of a rotary knob analog depth input with a trigger binary trigger input never seemed to be needed by any other game.

Technical

Used a piece of multicolor tinted cellophane over the screen, which color-coded the depths at which the submarines would appear. This gave the illusion of color in an otherwise black and white video game era.
