Players choose from one out of seven dodgeball characters: Kunio (the main character in the Kunio-Kun series), Riki (Kunio's rival), Miyuki (a schoolgirl), Sabu (a Yakuza boss), Shinji (a Bosozoku member), Misuzu (a big lady) and Kenji (a street bum). Each character has two generic teammates as well. Players knock each other out with volleyballs until everyone of the oppsosite team are out.
The generic teammates consist of of a nerd, a bald fat guy, a man in high-school wrestling costume, a hipster and a girl in a volleyball uniform. Players can pass the ball to teammates, execute Street Fighter-style special moves, etc.
When the power meter below your screen is full, you can execute a desperation attack along with your teammates. You cannot hold the ball for a long time or it will explode and be given to the other team. Even if the team's captain or a teammate is defeated, they are still involved in the game, but outside the field. They can still pick-up the ball and throw it at opponents.
After defeating a team, you can let that team's captain join your team, replacing one of your teammates. In a one-Player game, first you must fight agaisnt a team consiting of generic characters and then you get to fight agaisnt all the other players. After defeating them all, you must fight agaisnt a 'dream team' consisting of team captains that did not join your team.
For the last battle, you must fight agaisnt the D.B.Maou and two demons. D.B.Maou has two different shapes when you fight him. After defeating D.B.Maou, you get to view your character's ending.

Technos Japan Corp.,the company who made this game among other games (such as the Double Dragon franchinse, Block Out and the whole Kunio-kun series), was bankrupted when this game was released. This fact makes the game one of the most sought-after Neo-Geo titles to collectors and fans of Technos' Kunio-kun series.
The fate of Technos is currently unknown. Some said that they have given up on the videogame industry, while other rumors suggest that the company has changed its name to Urban Plant.
The game's Japanese title is Kunio no Nekketsu Toukyuu Densetsu, but when played on an American or European Neo-Geo, the game title changes to Super Dodge Ball.
The game is Technos' second attempt to revive one of their famous franchises (the first was Double Dragon) and it is probably the last Kunio-Kun game ever made. It features the whole cast from the original Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-Kun (Kunio, Riki, Shinji, Misuzu and Sabu) as well as three new characters; Miyuki , Kenji and D.B.Maou.
