The player controls Spawn, an undead "hellspawn" who's rebelled and now fights his former masters in the name of good using a plethora of advanced weapons at his disposal.

The comic book "hero" SPAWN fights the forces of evil using a multitude of weaponry in a free roaming, third-person, 3D polygonal free-for-all combat environment. Cabinets may be linked togeather for competetive, head-to-head style play.
Players may choose from eleven different characters (including the the game's namesake) as well as hidden and secret "time release" characters. Players fight through layers of the underworld to a final confrontation with the source of the evil, Malebolgia.

The single player control panel is arranged in typical Street Fighter style except with only one joystick and six buttons, rather than two sets of controls. Up to four single-player cabinets may be linked togeather for competetive play.
