Description

Piloting a pie-shaped spacecraft, you must move from sector to sector collecting treasure while avoiding enemies and corner-mounted lasers. The more treasure you have with you the higher your bonus when you reach the goal. A "thief" roams the sectors collecting treasure at the same time, but shooting the thief causes him to drop all his treasure.

Game Play

The game plays similar to Robotron: 2084 and Smash TV. The controls are the same and you can move from sector to sector by consulting a map. Most of the enemies are killed with one hit, but one type of enemy requires a direct hit to the center. This character is pie-shaped with a "piece" missing. You can shoot off other pieces a couple hits at a time to make hitting the center easier.

Cabinet Information

The dedicated version comes in a standard Taito cabinet with generic "Taito" side art, but the coloring is blue on black, matching the rest of the cabinet.

Conversion

The game uses the same boardset as Qix but has the addition of a coin processor board to prevent ROM swaps. A ROM hack exists to make the game run without the coin processor board, so there is a possibility that a conversion could be a straight ROM swap. Other games that run on nearly identical hardware are Zoo Keeper, The Electric Yo-Yo and Kram.

VAPS Arcade/Coin-Op Space Dungeon Census

There are 15,211 members of the Video Arcade Preservation Society / Vintage Arcade Preservation Society, 9,644 whom participate in our arcade census project of games owned, wanted, or for sale. Census data currently includes 166,563 machines (6,981 unique titles).

Common - There are 26 known instances of this machine owned by Space Dungeon collectors who are active members. Of these, 20 of them are original dedicated machines. One is a conversion in which game circuit boards (and possibly cabinet graphics) have been placed in (and on) another game cabinet. 5 of them are only circuit boards which a collector could put into a generic case if desired.

Wanted - There are 7 active VAPS members currently looking for Space Dungeon.

This game ranks a 4 on a scale out of 100 (100 = most often seen, 1=least common) in popularity based on census ownership records.

This game ranks a 8 on a scale out of 100 (100 = most often seen, 1=least common) in popularity based on census want list records.

Rarity and Popularity independently are not necessarily indications of value. [More Information]

Technical

If the original NiCad battery is still on the PCB, remove it and replace it with a 3.6v rechargable, mounted away the board. The 4116 video RAM ICs often fail and since they are becoming hard to find, they can be replaced with modified 4164's.
