All the previous games have been leading up to this! Just you, the machine, and four arrows. Select your song, and strut your stuff on the dance floor by following the arrows as they scroll up the screen.
Interesting to note, unlike previous installments in Konami's Dance Dance Revolution series, this version also features a graph on the song selection screen, which depicts certain qualitites of a selected song, as well as new names for the basic/trick/maniac settings from past versions (written in kanji).
Select a song and desired settings (hidden/sudden/stealth, and new to DDRMAX, a speed selection) then using the arrows underneath your feet, move and groove along to the music. Sometimes, you may need to 'hold' on one or more of the arrows during play, which was a similar play element in Konami's own ParaParaParadise.

By holding the start button after selecting a song, you can enter a secret option menu. This will allow you to adjust different things before your game begins such as the arrow's speed (up to eight times faster than normal), the direction you face, etc.
This latest version of Dance Dance Revolution is said to contain a song so fast, it outdoes any of the other songs from any of the previous installments, clocking in at 300 beats per minute!
