At the begining of the game, players can choose whatever team they want to play as well as the team they want to play against twelve possible choices. This game has two different versions of this sequence. For one version, the teams available are Chicago, Los Angeles, Natural High and Brawl State. In another version, the teams have the names of the famous NBA basketball teams including the Chicago Bulls, the Phoenix Suns, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Detroit Pistons.
Players can also choose to be one of eight characters. Each character has a different name and personality: Reggie, all-American Mohawk, tough and mean Vinnie, a great player Hammer, rebound king Blade, a crowd pleaser Tyrone, defensive giant Moose, real champ and Lewis, top shooter.
The game basically follows the same rules as basketball. Two points are awarded for each basket shot. Three points are awarded for completed shots made from outside the three-point line. The game does not account for fouls so players are encouraged to use the Punch feature to make the game more enjoyable.
To Shoot or Pass, press the appropriate button. To "fake out" an opponent, hold the button down longer. If your teammate is holding the ball, you can "tell him" to Shoot or Pass by pressing the corresponding button.
To block, press and release the Shoot button. To steal, aim your player at the ball and press the Pass button.

This is not much of a "cheat", because if you play long enough the game will tell you how to do it: position yourself behind an opposing player and press the shoot and pass buttons at the same time. Your player will dive forward and pull down the pants of the opposing player. This will make him drop the ball as well as "freeze" for a couple of seconds while he pulls up his pants. You take this time to steal the ball.
The original game kit comes with a JAMMA adaptor, but the wiring on that adaptor is not strictly JAMMA. The Test and Tilt inputs are remapped to the 1P Up and 1P Down traces respectively. Since the game uses optical joysticks, the wiring to those controls runs directly from the gameboard.
