Night Bomber is an electromechanical flight simulator type game. A steering yoke is used to move a crosshair up, down, left, or right while a single thumb button is used to launch missiles/rockets. The playfield consists of a rotating drum coated in phosphorescent paint to create a top-down cityscape with 11 lighted targets (a factory, a refinery, battleships, etc.). The crosshair is painted on a mirror that is swiveled in accordance with the yoke movements. An additional mirror is used to reflect the rocket images onto the playfield at the correct times. Each time a target is hit, the player is awarded 10, 30, or 50 points according to location of the integral rotary Target Value Disc. The 1's, 10's, and 100's places are represented by score reels, while the thousand's place is represented by a "1" that illuminates once a 1,000 point score is reached. If the player accumulates more than 420 (jumper selectable) points, the game time is extended. A normal game lasts about one revolution of the timer (1.5 minutes), an extended game is about two (again, operator selectable by adjusting the timer friction motor).
The player steers a crosshair over an illuminated cityscape using the flight yoke. Pushing the yoke in results in "diving" or moving the crosshair down, pulling the yoke results in "climbing" or moving the crosshair up. Depressing the thumb button launches a missile/rocket towards the crosshair location. Hitting a target causes a large explosion graphic to appear accompanied by a deep "boom" sound. Missing a target causes a small explosion graphic to appear accompanied by a "boom-fizzle" sound. The only other sound present is the "engine sound," which is played throughout the entire game and resembles a high pitched whistling or whooshing sound.
