Description

A player controls Batman who advances through various stages that are taken from the 1989 movie. Stages include views from the Batmobile, and the Batwing, and the final stage is a battle with The Joker. The intermission features digitized voices from the actors, and photos from the film.

Batman was produced by Atari Games in 1990.

Game Introduction

When the platform is higher than you can jump, fire the Batrope upwards.

Game Play

Common enemies appear throughout the game, shooting guns and throwing knives at Batman. The player character's energy is displayed using the Batman logo -- three hits, and you are dead.

This game features realistic sounds. and voices from the movie:

  • Batman - "I'm Batman.", "Be careful.", "Hold on!", "Get in the car.", "Shields Open!".
  • Joker - "Wait till they get a load of me!", "The pen is truly mightier than a sword!", "Why did somebody tell me that he had one of those things!!", "He stole my balloons!", "I do not know the art, but I like it.", "Daddy is going to make some art, darling.", "Can be truce. I have a bat in my belfry.", "Shall we dance (ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha)!", "Come to me!", "Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight?", "You would not hit a guy with glasses? Cheats, Tricks, Bugs, and Easter Eggs

When you push the test mode button, go to game options and set difficulty to Easy. Exit the test mode by pushing the test mode button. While in Gotham City (stage 1), enemies do not come out of the door, but they will again in later stages.

Trivia

This game was only released as a conversion kit. Rumor has it that 1000 were made. It is based upon the movie of the same name.

Even though there is another game called Batman Forever, the two are technically unrelated to each other since they were created by different companies.

In May 1939, Batman's first appearance in Detective Comics #27 by Bob Kane (1915-1998). The Batman TV Series debuted on ABC in January 12, 1966. In June 23, 1989, The first Batman Movie opened in theaters, and in several months, the video tape was released in the markets.

Cabinet Information

The side art shows a photo of Batman standing next to the Batmobile. The cabinet above is a conversion of a William's Blaster (which is also similar to the Duramold Bubbles, but that cabinet was blue). The monitor bezel shows some photo stills from the movie.

A cocktail version was released in Japan only.

The cabinet was manufactured by Atari in 1991.

Conversion

The PCB board can be swapped for any number of other JAMMA games such as Rolling Thunder, RoboCop, Bad Dudes Vs. Dragon Ninja, Haunted Castle, and many others.

There are DIP switches to change and set options such as free play. Other configurable options include difficuty, extra life score, and high score table. There is no cabinet (upright/cocktail) setting so if you put the PCB in a cocktail cabinet, the screen will not flip between player one and two.
